4 Select the HRM-Pro Plus heart rate monitor. TIP: Stay 10 m (33 ft.) away from other wireless sensors while pairing. After you pair the first time, your device automatically recognizes the heart rate monitor each time it is activated and in range. Pairing the Heart Rate Monitor With the Garmin Connect ™ App
To cut a long story short, I eventually ‘fixed’ this by taking the battery out of the HRM Pro for 10 minutes and I shorted the connection between the HRM Pro’s battery terminal (I’d read somewhere in the past, that this is good practice with HRM straps when changing batteries, to get rid of any residual capacitive charge in the sensor).
Simple sensors might be more easily made bug free or there might just be a lack of new features to add. Either way, it’s rare they get updated. Garmin has just released some new firmware for the Garmin HRM-PRO. Officially V8.10 improves ANT+ and BLE connectivity and, more interestingly, adds an extra Bluetooth channel.
Thanks Ian! Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who doesn't always get the "external HR connected" message. The reason that I am unsure of the connection between the watch and the HRM Pro is because sometimes the Run Dynamics pages appear (when the HRM is connected), and sometimes they do not appear (I assume that this happens when there is no connection).
The connection strength for the HRM in the pairing menu sometimes shows just one little red bar, and after pairing, it reads “No Signal.”. I tried the trick of removing and flipping the HRM battery 180º, then replacing with a new battery, but the connection problem did not change in any way.
However, if you want to use the HRM-Pro as an all day activity monitor it can only be connected to one Garmin Connect account. If you do not need the all day activity monitoring (steps, etc) then the cheaper HRM-Tri or HRM-Run may suit your needs better.
