The prime is much faster in that you can use the combination as a full time lens (a lot of people buy 300 2.8 II because of its performance with 2x III, whereas a lot of people buy 2x III because it "can" be used with 70-200 II, big difference). You also need to stop it down to 7.1, the IQ @ 5.6 is unacceptably soft. Using the 100-400Lii and EF 2x III TC works flawlessly on my R6 using the original Canon adapter. With a 1.4x adapter it should work as well. The RF 100-500L only works with an RF TC from 300mm onwards and is brutally expensive and barely better than the EF variant, only 25% more zoom reach. -- hide signature --. Canon recently introduced two new extenders, the EF 1.4x III extender, and the EF 2x III extender. These new extenders were redesigned, and optimized to work very well with the new range of Canon telephoto lenses. I did use the new 2x III extender on the new 300, and found that it did work well.
